Sheriff’s Office Responds To Fatal Shooting Incident In Adair County

At 7:32 a.m. on March 23, 2024, Adair County 911 received a report of a potential shooting in the vicinity of the 1000 block of Old Montpelier Road.

Adair County Sheriff Josh Brockman, accompanied by deputies and officers from the Columbia Police Department, promptly arrived at the scene. They discovered an individual with a rifle near an outbuilding, with the victim located across the road requiring urgent medical assistance.

Due to the presence of the armed suspect in close proximity, emergency medical services (EMS) were unable to approach the scene safely. Sheriff Brockman and Deputy Chandler Staten strategically positioned themselves behind the residence, supported by Deputy Tweedy and Columbia Officer Trevor Foster providing cover, enabling them to safely extract the victim from the premises.

The victim was swiftly transported by sheriff’s patrol vehicle to a location approximately one mile away, where they were transferred to EMS care. Tragically, despite these efforts, the victim was pronounced deceased upon arrival at TJ Sampson Hospital.

Subsequently, law enforcement personnel from the Adair County Sheriff’s Office, Columbia Police, and Kentucky State Police (KSP) initiated contact with the armed suspect. Despite repeated verbal commands, the suspect refused to surrender, necessitating the use of a Taser by the Sheriff’s Office to safely apprehend the individual.

The investigation into this incident, including the identities of those involved, has been transferred to the jurisdiction of the Kentucky State Police. Further details will be released by KSP at a later time.
