Senator Higdon: Progress Update On New Market Bridge Replacement

FRANKFORT, KY (Feb. 17, 2025)—The following is a statement from Senate Transportation Chair Jimmy Higdon, R-Lebanon, regarding an update on replacing the New Market Bridge in Marion County.

“I certainly appreciate the patience of residents in Marion County, particularly those in the New Market and Jessietown areas, who the bridge closure has significantly inconvenienced. In my 23 years in the General Assembly as a state representative and now as a state senator, I have worked on many transportation projects. The New Market Bridge has undoubtedly been one of the most challenging. The Kentucky Transportation Cabinet has experienced factors beyond its control. However, like them, I remain committed to seeing this project through to completion.

“I’m happy to report that after a prolonged and challenging process, we’re seeing meaningful progress toward replacing the New Market Bridge in Marion County—a project that has tested the patience of many residents but remains a top priority.

“I encourage everyone to continue offering patience in the weeks ahead because the light at the end of the tunnel is in sight. I want to thank Brad Bottoms, our District 4 chief engineer, and his team for their efforts. I must also commend Senator Max Wise and Representative Michael “Sarge” Pollock for their continued push to complete this project.”

Barring any further delays, the construction contract for the New Market Bridge is anticipated to be let in June, with work expected to begin in August.
