Campbellsville Man Arrested For Attempted Murder Of Peace Officer

Saturday, December 14th, 2024 at 4:57PM, The Taylor County Sheriff’s Office was dispatched to Pops Road on a complaint that Cody Laytart, 31, of Campbellsville, had shot at the him.

Sheriff Dickie Benningfield arrived on scene first, exited his vehicle and was talking to the caller.

While he was standing beside his vehicle, he heard 4 shots ring out.

As Deputy Josh Durbin was arriving on scene, he heard the 4th shot.

Sheriff Benningfield and Deputy Durbin located 4 bullet holes in the rear of the Sheriff’s vehicle.

When units located Laytart and placed him into custody, he threatened them with physical harm and death.

He spit in Deputy Durbin’s face, kicked the back glass of the cruiser window and knocked it off track.

Laytart also violated conditions of his release from last time he was incarcerated.

Other members of the Sheriff’s Department arrived on scene post incident to assist.

Kentucky State Police also arrived to assist and will be investigating this case.

This investigation is still underway at this time.

Laytart is charged with Attempt Murder of Peace Officer, Resisting Arrest, Assault 3rd – Police Officer, Alcohol Intoxication in a Public Place, Violation of Conditions of Release, Criminal Mischief (2nd degree), and Terroristic Threatening (2nd Degree).
