The Lady Indians’ Season Comes to an End
After two years away from the KHSAA 5th Region Girls Basketball Tournament, the Adair County Girls basketball team earned their spot after winning runner-up in the 20th District just last week. However, going up against the Bardstown Lady Tigers (15-14), number one team in the 19th District, the Lady Indians (17-13), knew they had a hard game ahead of them.
Adair County started off the first quarter strong, with some hard-hitting plays. Freshman Reese Bardin, nailed two three-pointers early on to help give her team a quick momentum boost. Seventh-grader Ila Loy, poured in six points in the game. Junior Kinzlee Akin, led all Lady Indian scorers with 13 points. Center freshman Addison Bowman, tallied eight points. The Lady Indians brought freshman forward Allee Campbell off the bench, who made 12 points alone as the game continued to progress. The team had their sights set on the ball, and only trailed by two, with a score of 16-14, as they pushed into the next quarter.
As the second stanza came and went, the energy from the Lady Indians continued to show no sign of stopping. The first half finished off with the Lady Indians still falling just short of the Lady Tigers, with the margin being brought up to 35-30.
Coming out of the locker room ready to rumble, the Lady Indians turned the score around with a 14-2 scoring run for the quarter. Yet, after a couple of timeouts from each team, the score tightened back up to 44-41 in Bardstown’s favor. Adair County had one quarter left, and they were determined to make it count.
With the clock ticking down, the Adair County Girls basketball team brought out some of their best maneuvers, but with a nearly three-minute score drought in the last quarter, the team idled their momentum and barely lost in the opening round of the 5th Region Tournament, which is being held at the Roby Dome in Marion County.
Despite their tough fight, the Lady Indians fell short with a final score of 56-49. Following the game, Allee Campbell was selected to the All Regional Tournament team.
“Working with my team and having my teammates help push me has helped a lot,” Campbell said. “Going through the year and doing different things throughout has really gave me the confidence in the paint, and now I know that I can do it.”
Nevertheless, this will not be the last time you see the Adair County Lady Indians, seeing as second-year head coach Stacia Hill has her sights set big for her girls.
“I think attending (Region) means a lot, to our school, our program. I think we have a great group of young girls to build on, along with a great foundation,” Hill said. “I think we have a bright future ahead of us, I thought for the first time for many of these girls going to the region, they played pretty well.”
Adair County shot 20-49 from the field and went 5 for 19 from the arc. While Bardstown went 21-57 from the hardwood, and also drilled 5 three-point baskets.
