Party Leads to Stolen Police Vehicle and an Arrest over Week End in Columbia


Columbia Police arrest 2 after responding to large party that resulted in shots being fired and police cruiser being stolen and wrecked.

   At 1:01am this morning Adair County 911 received a report of a large party that an altercation had broken out at located in the 200 block of Tutt Street in the limits of Columbia. CPD officers was dispatched to the scene. Upon arrival as officers were exiting their vehicle officers were notified that shots had been fired and officers heard at least 1 shot. Officers ran to the back yard to investigate and as a result 36 year old James Haywood of Columbia was arrested on charges of Wanton Endangerment 1st degree, and public intoxication with additional charges forthcoming.

   During the time the officers had scrambled to the back of the residence due to their being a possible active shooter another male had made his way around the house and jumped into Officer Drew Conn's assigned patrol car activated the emergency equipment and fled the scene in the stolen cruiser . The suspect wrecked the cruiser approximately 1 mile from the scene when he lost control of vehicle at a high speed in a curve on Bomar Heights and struck a utility pole at the intersection of Allen Street and fled on foot.  

   As a result 5 additional officers were called out to assist the two officers already on scene in dispersing the party and searching for the suspect.

At 02:47 am officers investigations led them to Heartland Circle just outside the limits of Columbia to a possible location of a suspect in the theft of the police cruiser. At 03:42 am CPD Officers took 20 year old Lova Johnson into custody on charges of: Theft by Unlawful Taking Auto over 10,000 dollars, Criminal Mischief 1st Degree , Leaving the Scene of an Accident , Theft of a Firearm and Wanton Endangerment.1st Degree . Additional charges will be pending.

Both Haywood and Johnson were lodged in the Adair County Regional Jail .   Officer Drew Conn and John Dial are continuing the investigation. Conn and Dial were assisted by Chief Jason Cross , Sgt Jr Murphy , Ofc . Josh Brockman , Ofc Jordan Dean , Deputy Josh Durbin and Constable Jason Rector .

Drug Arrest made in Russell County

An investigation into a suspicious vehicle in the parking lot of the Mt. Olive Baptist Church late Saturday night resulted in the arrest of a Marion County man and the seizure of several grams of Methamphetamine.

While patrolling the Sano – Mt. Olive community, Deputy Evan Burton observed a 2002 Saturn car in the church parking lot just before 9:00 p.m. After making contact with the occupants of the vehicle, Deputy Burton utilized his partner, K-9 Matt. Subsequent to K-9 Matt alerting to the presence of the odor of illegal drugs, Deputy Burton discovered three baggies containing Methamphetamine on one of the passengers.

Emory L. Miller, 26, of Lebanon, was arrested and charged with Trafficking in a Controlled Substance 1st Degree (Meth), Possession of Marijuana and Possession of Drug Paraphernalia.

Miller was processed and lodged in the Russell County Detention Center.
